Historical Gulf Coast cottage sits just 2 blocks from the beach

There's something so welcoming about a home with a white picket fence, it's as if the cottage itself would love to open the gate and usher you up the walkway. This 19th century sweetie, built in 1889, blends the simple pleasures of friendliness and comfort. The Galveston, Texas, house sits in the East End Historic District just two blocks from the beach and other amusements. So it's handy and historical — double the pleasure.
After lolling a bit on the porch — first take a ride on the swing and then sip some lemonade on the steps — it's time to venture inside. In the front room, it's as if you are still outside: The light streams in from the windows dominating the seating area while the wood floors accentuate the history of the space. A lot of the structure's original wood flooring, walls and high ceilings have been preserved.

In the kitchen there is a charm to the bold flooring with a just-the-right-size island and space to cook up a satisfying meal — fresh fish, anyone?
The dining room links the front room and the kitchen with a big table to gather around and a pleasing archway to admire. There is plenty of room for kids to maneuver around the table and for traffic flow among the rooms.
The bathrooms are updated with bright lighting, more quaint flooring and gleaming fixtures. It represents that lovely space between vintage and modern — we approve.
A graceful atmosphere resides in this bedroom, where the decor and dainty dressers fit the lighting and the home. Coastal life should be soothing, and this is.
An upstairs bedroom makes a great spot for the kids to camp out, with views and little nooks to call their own. The slant on the ceiling gives this room a great "hideaway" feeling, a perfect way to enhance the vacation vibe.

Charm, space and history are excellent components of a lovely cottage. But when you can feel free to stretch out, play games and be yourself in the environment, too, that is something to be thankful for. Nothing beats a graceful design.
