This modern Australian farmhouse looks at home beach-side

Australia isn't the first place that comes to mind when one thinks of farm houses, but this tidy adaptation of modern farm style fits in, even by the beach! Built by Jackson Clements Burrows Architects, this seaside residence sits humbly amidst other single-story dwellings in old Barwon Heads, Victoria.
This "Seaview Residence" was originally commissioned to replace an aging vacation home, but it later transitioned into a full-time residence. The house is sectioned into three main quarters, with a semi-sunken garage, seen in black on the photo's left. The steep gabled roofs and wide barn doors on the white structure pay homage the surrounding architecture.

Inside, the house's open layout is entirely modern. Paneled wooden walls join at the sloped ceiling, creating the impression of upward movement. The large glass windows keep artificial lighting to a minimum.
The kitchen is streamlined and functional with cream-colored modular shelving and a countertop that matches the floorboards.
This tiny wall space occupies the house's living room. Even the fireplace looks like a high-tech addition next to the widescreen TV. It's for keeping warm when the balmy ocean breezes come in at night.
This open pavilion is the sunniest spot during the day. It's the perfect place to share a meal or read a book while still enjoying the views outside.
The pavilion opens into a North-facing central garden, which is shielded from the prevailing winds. A semi-shaded breezeway connects the different living areas and hides an outdoor shower for rinsing off.
Here's another view of the breezeway that shows the clear view to the front street. Notice the full-length glass panels and sliding doors.

This modern interpretation of farmhouse simplicity makes for a retreat-style permanent dwelling.
