It’s hard to believe this Virginia blue farmhouse is a dressed-up log cabin

At first glance, with its ocean blue weatherboard and gingerbread trim in alternating shades of cream and goldenrod, this Italianate farmhouse seems primly situated in its rural surroundings. Yet, underneath the ornate cornices, detailed railings and brick accents, a 175-year-old log cabin girds the frames and walls of this antebellum farm home. Orphaned at six and made a coppersmith apprentice at nine, Samuel Harper did well enough for himself to purchase property and build this still-standing log cabin, finishing it in 1839. Named after its original log splitter, the Samuel Harper House is beautifully updated to maintain the character of nearby historic Old Town Leesburg, Virginia.
Jennette Taylor, the Historic Virginia Properties real estate agent (who sold this home in less than a day), finds that "home buyers often jump at the chance to live in a turnkey farmhouse in Old Town Leesburg." Like many homes and buildings in Old Town, the Samuel Harper farmhouse has old country charm with a gable roof and rubble stone basement.

Like a clear night sky, the deep periwinkle porch ceiling pulls gazes upwards to the restored bead board, forged iron lamp and rich trim detailing.
The home rests on a gentle slope – its side entrance greeting a simple dirt lane that rolls through ancient hickories, oaks, maples and a split-rail fence.
Before the days of central air and electric fans, windows were strategically placed above doors to encourage air flow while still maintaining privacy. Transom windows above the front door also allow sunlight to brighten an entrance during the day. During dark evenings, a milk glass globe casts a warm interior light outside.
Rich wood finishes gleam down the center stairway, ending in a beautifully carved newel post.
Upstairs, the spacious master suite features romantic vintage accents – a white curling chandelier, arched mantle and trim, beveled-glass heart mirror and burnt pewter candlesticks.
Bisque walls flow halfway down and turn into crisp white chair railing that wraps around the large and modern bathroom.
Pewter detailing is just the bit of bling needed in this modern farmhouse bathroom with its small black and white diamond tiles and antique-styled sink.
Milk glass pedestal candy dishes stand pretty atop an antique hand-carved hutch that faces the extra large kitchen, accessible from the front entry way and the living room.
With room for a full house of family and friends, honey oak cabinets line the walls, with storage and space both abundant in this expanded farmhouse kitchen. Chalk paint adds fancy and function to an interior door.
Hardwood floors shined a chestnut brown enhance this airy room with its numerous window views of shade trees and barn buildings.
A second porch offers screened-in tranquility for long, quiet evenings listening to katydids and crickets.
